Summer/Fall 2011 Racing

E-mail Print PDF

After some post season downtime in June it was time to build up for the upcoming fall season. As part of the build up to the fall there were a few track races in late summer. 10 000m races seem to be a dying breed but the Q’s Victoria Track Series included one. A high level field was lined up and UVic was lined up as the venue for a rare evening under the lights race. Against a star studded field that included Team Canada runners and a former Olympian Pacific Athletics’ Craig Odermatt had a breakthrough type run placing a strong 5th place in 31:42. The time was Craig’s best for 10K in 9 yrs! After the 10 000 there was a trip to Albania where Craig showed he is not only running well but coaching well. He was off to Albania in a coaching role after his protégé was picked for Team Canada for the 2011 World Mountain Running Championships. His athlete Melissa Ross was the top Canadian woman by 5 min. That led into Thanksgiving weekend. Looking to build on the 10 000m result Craig entered the Goodlife Fitness half marathon. Against very tough competition Craig managed an excellent 5th place overall against over 5000 runners. Craig’s time of 1:10:43 represented a new personal best. This performance is even more impressive considering Craig is a master. It’s not often a master can get a lifetime personal best time or a very high overall placing in the race. Craig is looking to build on this strong race as he represents Pacific Athletics in the upcoming BC Cross Country Championships.

GREG PETERS RETIRES FROM COACHING

E-mail Print PDF

Our Combined Events coach for the past three years, Greg Peters, has retired from coaching.   The athletes he has been coaching will be assimilated into the Power Speed Group.

Greg brought a wealth of experience with him after he retired from teaching in Smithers where he had run one of the best high school programs in BC, sending, over the years, many athletes on scholarship into the collegiate programs in the United States.

When he joined Pacific Athletics in 2009, Greg brought great enthusiasm to the club and built his combined events group to 10 athletes in 2011.   Continuing the tradition he started in Smithers, in 2011 two of his athletes are continuing on scholarship to University programs this Autumn. Zarria Storm is off to Sacramento State University in California to compete in NCAA Div I heptathlon and David McKay is off to York University in Toronto to compete in CIS pole vault.

Greg has had a very successful career in Track and Field coaching as he has coached on several International teams for Canada and on numerous BC Teams.   He finishes his career this September by coaching at the Commonwealth Youth Games for Athletics Canada on the Isle of Mann in the British Isles.   Greg has also used his knowledge of the sport by instructing in many coaching education courses for both the old and new NCCP programs over the years including an international coaching course for the IAAF.

Thank you Greg, for your contribution to our club and to the sport of track and field.

TURKEY SALE - SEPTEMBER 29, 2011

E-mail Print PDF

Once again, we will be having our ANNUAL THANKSGIVING TURKEY SALE this Autumn.   Pickup day will be Friday, September 29th, 9 days before Thanksgiving on October 10th.   These fresh frozen organic free range turkeys will again be sold for $3.65 per pound in sizes from 11 to 22 pounds. Anyone who has eaten one of these turkeys can attest to their great taste and tenderness.

This is one of only two fund raisers we have each year and it needs your support.   Each turkey sold will also add $5.00 to the club account of the athlete making the sale. This money can be used by the athlete for membership, uniforms and travel to meets.   The profits from the sale go directly into the programs, equipment, entry fees and travel to meets for the club training groups.   For the Youth and older athletes, the money earned by selling the turkeys also enables athletes (who raise $100 or more in their athlete accounts with two successive fund raisers) to have their BC Team fees of $280 paid for by the Club.

Turkey sale flyers and instructions will be e-mailed to all members the first week of September.
